Horticulture
The horticulture market in New Zealand has steadily grown in importance since the 1970s. According to HortResearch, horticultural exports comprised 2 percent of New Zealand's merchandise exports in 1975, and 7.7 percent in 2004, when they were worth over $2.2 billion.
Kiwifruit, apples and wine are the major horticultural exports, but there are many other crops that are grown for both export and domestic consumption.
The largest areas under horticultural crops are Hawke's Bay, Canterbury, Bay of Plenty and Marlborough, but fruit and/or vegetables are grown commercially in most areas of New Zealand.
Ballance offers specialist advice and products for growers in all horticultural sectors. The articles in this section reflect just some of the interest areas of the Ballance horticultural staff.
