New Zealand's cropping industry may be small by world standards, but it plays a key role in our agricultural economy. As an indication of scale, the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries report that the 2005 wheat harvest was in the order of 277,000 tonnes. Oats, barley and maize are other important crops for both animal and human consumption.A variety of other crops are grown in various parts of the country, including a wide range of seed crops.
